History and Development Paths
The face of the panchayat began to change with the advent of Kuttiady Bridge, Kuttiady Irrigation Project, and highland development. Kooniyod in this area has been a human settlement since ancient times. Kooniyod, which maintained trade relations by boat with the trading center of Vadakara town, can be described as the 'port of Changaroth'. Merchants who migrated from the Kollam region became the traders of Kooniyod.
The Koothali Estate agitation and Muthukad agitation are prominent struggles that took place in this area. The Onam game and Pulikali held in connection with the Kooniyod Bhagavathy Temple festival bear great similarity to the celebrations held at Pisharikavu in Kollam, Koyilandy.
